THE SCENE: BLEACH BLONDE (EX- DROP DEAD, GORGEOUS) SIGN TO RISE RECORDS?

Alternative rock outfit, Bleach Blonde (featuring former Drop Dead, Gorgeous members, Danny Stillman and Danny Cooper), have apparently signed with Rise Records. According to their Facebook ‘About’ page, the band has already inked a deal with Oregon based company.

You can check out the bands Facebook here, and their bio below:

Timing is everything and Bleach Blonde is fast on the path to success. Featuring Danny Stillman and Danny Cooper of Drop Dead Gorgeous, after officially founding the band less than six months ago, in August of 2012, the group has already written their first EP and inked a record deal with Rise Records.

Fronted by lead vocalist Danny “Stills” Stillman, Bleach Blonde came together when the Denver based singer began writing via email with guitarist David Barella and drummer Danny Cooper, who lived in LA at the time. A month later, the trio joined forces with guitarist Michael Payne and bass player Coty Eikenberg. The five members officially formed Bleach Blonde, a name reminiscent of shared memories in Venice Beach and an homage to Nirvana.

Stills says the group has found inspiration for their “mainstream sound with an underground twist. We aim to think outside of the box and strive for a sound that we can call our own.“

After signing with Rise Records in late 2012, the group plans to record their debut full length with Kris Crummett (Drop Dead Gorgeous, Dance Gavin Dance) and “take over the world,” jokes Stills.

ON THE SCENE: RISE RECORDS

The record company Rise Records has become a very popular topic of discussion lately. With the company catapulting big names out onto the top of the scene such as The Devil Wears Prada, Breathe Carolina, and Attack Attack!, just to name a few, the company should be talked about right? Well, just being talked about doesn’t mean that it is all good things being said.

The records current and former rosters respectively, are very impressive. Now, with all these big name bands that can refer to Rise Records in some way, you would think that there is nothing bad to be said about the label. However, this is not the case. In fact, it is far from it. Rise Records is the subject of severe controversy, with the label “continuously” signing bands that “all sound the same.” I am here to stand in the defense of Rise Records.

RISE RECORDS-

After initially starting in 1991, founder Craig Ericson released a very miniscule amount of 7″ records before heading off to college. In 1999, he picked up the label idea again and ran with it. Rise Records was the foundation for names like the aforementioned: The Devil Wears Prada, Breathe Carolina, and Drop, Dead Gorgeous.

As we venture into the more current era, this is where we are going to witness what some will call the destruction of the scene, while others, myself included, will call what Rise Records has done for the scene a monumental accomplishment. Rise records has signed bands that most labels would overlook and say that it’s all been done before, or that they won’t make any money off of the band. Rise Records take chances. Don’t agree? Take a look for yourself: While they have bands like In Fear and Faith and Miss May I, they also have the recently signed Cheap Girls and The Early November, along with many other bands from metalcore to straight up punk bands, there’s no questioning the diversity on the label.

I have heard the Joey Sturgis debates before and quite frankly, I think he is an amazing producer. While  granted a lot of the bands that he has produced records for fall into some of the same genres, he is producing records that are selling. Why would a record company get rid of a producer that produces records that sell and that actually have very good content on them? Some people may say that the only difference between the “scene” bands on the label are the clean vocalists and screamers, a prime example of this is Sleeping With Sirens. While Kellin Quinn’s immaculate vocal range is a very unique aspect to the band, drummer Gabe Barham is a a very skilled drummer and he compliments the bands intricate  guitar work. Or guitarist Will Swan from Dance Gavin Dance, no matter if you’re talking Johnny Craig era or Kurt Travis era, Will Swan is an amazing guitarist.

Now, I have heard people ask, “Why is the scene over populated with screams, chugging, and breakdowns?” My answer: because it’s what people WANT to listen to right now. Why did Disco get big? Because people WANTED to listen to it. And I know people that still listen to that. This verse, chorus, verse, chorus, breakdown, chorus is what people are wanting to hear from bands right now. In five years, who knows what we are going to be listening to. Chugging might become irrelevant and instead of synths in breakdowns there are going to be harmonicas. Nobody can tell where the scene is going to turn to next. Having the strings falling off your guitar and running in place while you play may be the most uncool thing you can do in the future, who knows. But something I do know is that Rise Records is doing something that no other label is doing out there, they are signing bands that might be overlooked by other labels and they’re getting them out onto the scene and helping them live their dreams. No matter what anyone says, in my eyes, Rise Records is doing its part to save the scene.

THE SCENE: BEING AS AN OCEAN SIGN TO INVOGUE RECORDS

Yes, I realize I am a little late on this, but please bare with me. I finally decided to look into Being As An Ocean yesterday and now I feel obligated to post this. Up and coming straight-up hardcore bands are becoming more and more seldom to find in the music scene today, so it’s enlightening to see a band get signed that actually deserves to get signed – and that is where we find Being As An Ocean. BAAO have recently signed with InVogue Records. InVouge is owned and operated by Before Their Eyes frontman Nick Moore, and might I say, has a very impressive resume of artists. Ranging from indie rockers Belle Histoire to the electronic metalcore band That’s Outrageous! and now soon-to-be hardcore greats Being As An Ocean, InVogue is fixing to compete with the likes of Tragic Hero and Rise Records in no time at all.

BAAO are gearing up to release their debut full-length, Dear G-d, on September 18th, which they just finished up recording with producer Brian Hood (Gideon, The Crimson Armada). Be sure you pick up a copy of Dear G-d when it drops September 18th, it’s fixing to be an amazing release by such a young band. You can view the first single, the title track, “Dear G-d,” below.
